Botswana
Updated February 2006
"The Botswana Red Cross Society developed a Youth four part programme during the last years. This programme includes “Community Service” to reduce vulnerability and build the capacity of the people who live constantly in situations where their socio-economic security and their dignity are threatened, and to reduce environmental pollution. Useful activities in this part could be: identify and care for elderly and disabled people in the villages or clean up campaigns and tree planting. The second point of the programme is called “Protection of Life and Health”, in which Red Cross focuses on providing health education aimed at preventing and controlling diseases such as HIV and AIDS, sexual transmitted illness and sexual reproductive health. The main activities in this part are right now peer education programmes, which are done through health debates, drama, etc. With the third part called “international friendship and understanding” the Red Cross wants to improve interaction and networking among Red Cross Youth groups nationally and internationally as a way of sharing information and mutual understanding. Useful for this are activities like exchange visits with other youth clubs, pen pal links and organized youth camps. On “Dissemination of fundamental principles and humanitarian values” (part 4), the Red Cross wants to inform the youth about the ideas and fundamental principles of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent movement, the activities of the BRCS and also wants to promote international humanitarian values.
"BRCS mobilizes its youth volunteers by visiting schools and informs pupils about the main points of the “Youth Four Part Programme”. Interested pupils are encouraged to form a youth club. This youth clubs are supervised by teachers and renew their membership annually. Right now there are 18 activated youth clubs in Botswana.
"BRCS is also trying to publish a quarterly youth magazine to reach more young people.
The program is really successful and we are happy about the number of engaged young people! Check out the photos below to see what we're up to!
Mongolia
Updated January 2006
In 2006, we planned many activities. Our first activity was Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. We celebrated this day for the first time in Mongolia by organizing two activities:
1. A "humanity" activity for children to work in the local rubbish centre. The volunteers distributed warm clothes to 100 children that work in child labour. We also gave notebooks, bags, pencils, pens and clothes for 80 disabled children.
2. An "intelligence" activity. We worked in a bookstore and at the Ulaanbaator library. During our time there, we read the "I have a dream" speech of Martin Luther King. People watched a film about Martin Luther King's life. We also gave books about M.L.K. to people who attended.
It was excellent!
