Singapore River Singapore River:
The newly revitalized river district has become the cultural center for the city. Many shops and restaurants catering to "yuppies" (that's how it's advertised!) have sprung up along the river, making it an attractive alternative to the stuffy downtown.
Pedicab Street Scene in Singapore Street Scene:
This picture accurately shows why I think Singapore is an interesting mix of old and new. These cyclos could easily appear in Saigon or Phnom Pehn, while the buildings seem to be from a futuristic city.
Copthorne Harbour View Hotel in the Singapore Business District, Singapore Business District:
What seems like paradise to most is just another street in the business district of downtown Singapore. This is the view from the hotel lobby where I stayed on business. I didn't mind this trip, that's for sure!
Little India in Singapore Little India:
Little India presents the visitor with a welcome change from Singapore's sterile environment. Walking through this district, the visitor is overwhelmed with the hypnotic scents of Indian spices that lure the helpless visitor to any one of the many food stalls that line the street.
Raffles Hotel in Downtown Singapore United Technologies APO Headquarters in Singapore

Raffles Hotel:
(Left)  The Raffles Hotel is one of Singapore's most famous colonial landmarks. It also is well known for the Singapore Sling, a famous (and delicious) cocktail that was created here many years ago.

UTC Headquarters:
(Right)  This ultra-modern building houses the Asia-Pacific Headquarters of United Technologies and its subsidiaries. I worked here for a week in January 2000.

Singapore Parliament Chinese New Year in Singapore Parliament:
(Left)  Much of Singapore consists of a visually-pleasing mix of colonial-style architecture and modern glass and steel skyscrapers.

Chinese New Year:
(Right)  Since most of Singapore's population is ethnically Chinese, all Chinese holidays are celebrated. I saw this colorful statue during the 1999 Chinese New Year celebration.

Questions and Answers

Time Visited: February 1999, January 2000

Main Cities Visited: Singapore, Batam Island (Indonesia), Johor Bahru (Malaysia)

Modes of Transportation:Bus, Taxi, Subway, Airplane, Boat

How I Ended Up There: When planning my trip to the Philippines, I found out that I could add a stay in Singapore for only $80 more. I later came back for a week on business for Carrier.

Memorable Foods: Fresh tropical fruits, Indian foods, Muslim foods, Chinese foods

What I Liked: Safe surroundings, hard working - yet friendly - population

What I Disliked: Not much to surprise the eyes (almost too orderly)

Where I Stayed: Guesthouse, hotel (for business trip)

Singapore in Five Words: Forward-thinking, orderly, cosmopolitan, driven, stuffy

My Thoughts: I think that Singapore is grossly misrepresented in the western media. When I was planning my trip to Singapore, my friends told me to be careful and to try not to be caned. However, when I got there I was surprised to find a place whose population was somewhat relaxed, yet they possess a sense of purpose and responsibility. It was refreshing to be able to walk around wherever I wanted at three in the morning without any worries. Plus, the city wasn't as isolated as I thought, as a fun nightlife is only a 15 minute bus trip to Malaysia.
