Time Visited: October 2001
Main Cities Visited: Malmö, Stockholm
Modes of Transportation: Boat, Subway, Train
How I Ended Up There: 2001 vacation with father (on
a whim from Copenhagen)
Memorable Foods: fish, swedish meatballs (of course!),
lingonberries
What I Liked: Walking through old Stockholm, The impressive
Vasa Museum, Fun water taxis, Innovative Swedish design
What I Disliked: Couldn't find an Ikea, Luggage wasn't
big enough to get Swedish furniture home
Where I Stayed: Overnight Train, Hotel in Stockholm
Sweden in Five Words: stately, clean, well-kept, industrious,
relaxed
My Thoughts: I wasn't planning on visiting Sweden, but
as the days passed on during our visit to Copenhagen, my father
and I started looking for an interesting place to go for a couple
days, and somehow we ended up in Stockholm! Stockholm was nothing
like I expected. The entire city is built across islands, which
is a beautiful setting for a city if you ask me. Like other Scandinavian
cities, the old town section of Stockholm is fantastically preserved,
which made it a very nice place to stroll around the countless
cobblestone alleys and streets. If I had to draw a simile to
an American city, Stockholm would be Boston. The city has a historic
feel yet you can tell it is definitely going in the right direction.
