Stockholm, Stockholm County
Skyline of Old Stockholm, Sweden Stockholm Skyline:
I was fortunate enough to take this fantastic shot of Stockholm one clear evening at twilight. In the foreground you will see the bus terminal with a large open square and in the distance you can see the old town. This is one of my all-time favorite photographs - everything seems to be just the way I remembered it.
Canals in Stockholm, Sweden Waterways:
The beautiful architecture, along with the quiet waterways and many green parks makes for a very attractive city. I would imagine that the rate of depression here is much lower than most major urban centers...
Stockholm Waterfront Stockholm Waterfront:
Stockholm is situated across many islands, each connected by either bridges or ferry service. The limits of building a city on an archipelago forced the early builders to make every building special, as there just wasn't room to build generic, monotonous buildings. I think you will agree they were successful.
Cannon and guard at Royal Palace, Stockholm, Sweden Royal Palace:
While walking around the old town we came across the Royal Palace. Throughout this palace there were guards who were required to stand perfectly still unless you crossed some imaginary line. The guard then came running over and yelled at you in Swedish and then ran back again. This could have made for hours of fun, but he was armed so I let him be.
Old Stockholm at Night Old town path in Stockholm

Nighttime Alleys:
(Left)  The public utilities department of Stockholm gets a lot of credit when it comes to lighting the historic streets. When you walk down the streets, you feel like you are in the 1800's.

Old Town Path:
(Right)   Everyone was dressed like it was the 1800's as well...

Colorful buildings in Stockholm What are you looking at?

Colorful Buildings:
(Left)   These buildings are a well-known symbol of Stockholm. They just don't make 'em today like they used to.

Odd Turtle:
(Right)   I have no idea why this statue is here. It made for an interesting photo though.

Swedish Flags Church in Old Stockholm

Swedish Street:
(Left)   This is another of the numerous side streets in the old town. Thanks to its bright and vibrant colors, the Swedish flag adds a nice splash of color to an otherwise ordinary neighborhood.

Church Spire:
(Right)   There's something about old church spires that makes me want to photograph them. Thankfully they're quite photogenic.

Horse statue in Stockhokm Old Town Stockholm Horse Statue:
(Left)    Bathed in the late afternoon sun, the horse statue looks quite impressive against the yellow backdrop.

Old Town Stockholm:
(Right)   Look at the colors here! Stockholm was definitely one of the most colorful cities I've ever been to. The entire city looks like it was designed by HGTV.

Yellow church in Stockholm City Hall / Radhuset Malmö (Malmo) Sweden

Yellow Church:
(Left)  This church reminded me of a mix between Boston and Charlottesville, Virginia. The grounds were spectacular, and my father and I spent a lot of time here relaxing and chatting.

Malmö:
(Right)   Malmö is a nice little city directly across the Øresund from Copenhagen. They recently constructed a bridge linking the two cities, which will help unite Danish and Swedish citizens.

My Thoughts: I wasn't planning on visiting Sweden, but as the days passed on during our visit to Copenhagen, my father and I started looking for an interesting place to go for a couple days, and somehow we ended up in Stockholm! Stockholm was nothing like I expected. The entire city is built across islands, which is a beautiful setting for a city if you ask me. Like other Scandinavian cities, the old town section of Stockholm is fantastically preserved, which made it a very nice place to stroll around the countless cobblestone alleys and streets. If I had to draw a simile to an American city, Stockholm would be Boston. The city has a historic feel yet you can tell it is definitely going in the right direction.
