Time Visited: March 1999
Main Cities Visited: Bangkok, Chiang Mai
Modes of Transportation: Pickup, Bus, Taxi, Roof of Pickup, Airplane, Elephant, Bamboo Raft
How I Ended Up There: My friend Ryan and I were looking for a fun place to go for a long weekend while in Hong Kong. We tried to go to Vietnam, but after we couldn't get a ticket, we tried to find somewhere cheap. Later that week we were in Thailand!
Memorable Foods: Fresh tropical fruits, unbelievable Thai foods, insects & grubs, banana crepes
What I Liked: Authentic Thai food (!), Traveling along the rivers in northern Thailand, delicious fresh fruit stands, and unbelievably cheap clothing
What I Disliked: The sweltering heat of the jungles
Where I Stayed: Hostels, guesthouses, bamboo huts
Thailand in Five Words: spicy, shiny, jungle, sacred, evolving
My Thoughts: Although I traveled to Thailand with no expectations,
I soon learned why it is one of the premier backpacking centers in Asia.
The food is spectacular (and cheap), the housing is plentiful, and the
adventures are everywhere. I spent a few days in Bangkok, touring the
city and devouring the plentiful fresh fruits and spicy curries. I then
took a bus with a friend to Chiang Mai, where we went on a hilltribe trek
that culminated in an elephant ride and handmade bamboo raft down the
Mae Kok River. I've never visited a place with so much adventure, and
I hope to go back again while I'm young to do some more exploring.
